Adaptive Thinking in Cities: Urban Continuity within Built Environments

چکیده
Adaptive reuse of built heritage is increasingly critical for reasons sustainability, particularly in urban spaces. With increasing pressures building and housing, the construction industry will likely continue to contribute 39% all carbon emissions world, with operational accounting 28%. Further demolition, renewal rebuilding not only obstruct pathways decarbonisation but create shocks that disrupt displace communities. We argue it essential support beyond conventional approaches position as a community-based asset can leverage local knowledge promote sustainable more circular economy. However, such an agenda must acknowledge challenges adopting new innovative practices reduce strain on current material social resources. This paper situates adaptive strategies existing stock other broader sustainability movements, framing from economic angle. A case study approach explores interventions how these might be extended areas.

Urban geographies I: Still thinking cities relationally
This review essay revisits recent scholarship within urban geography that has been shaped by relational theory, looking specifically at the scholarship on urban policy mobilities and urban assemblages. As will be shown, current urban geographies of relationality operate with irreconcilable grammars.
متن کاملTranslating cities: the use of digital technologies in urban environments
Computer models and information systems have been used for urban planning and design since the 1950s. Their capacity for analysis and problem-solving has increased substantially since then with hardware and software being able to manage large amounts of data. The beginning of the 2000s brought better technologies for data visualisation and intuitive software products and nowadays they are being...
متن کاملThinking Cities Through Objects
Why study the city through objects? As we will argue below, material objects are analytically important but until recently they have largely been marginalised in urban studies. Thus, our aim here is to bring them to the centre of the analysis of the city. In Part I, after first reviewing how materiality has been taken up in the work of key urbanists, we propose a conceptual and methodological o...
متن کاملAdaptive Cities: A Cybernetic Perspective on Urban Systems
Cities are changing constantly. All urban systems face different conditions from day to day. Even when averaged regularities can be found, urban systems will be more efficient if they can adapt to changes at the same speeds at which these occur. Technology can assist humans in achieving this adaptation. Inspired by cybernetics, we propose a description of cities as adaptive systems. We identify...
